Last Wednesday our managing directors had the pleasure to visit the Zalando Campus in Berlin. We have been working with Zalando since day one, two years already. Last week we had the opportunity to talk about and review the good and productive cooperation. Big topics of the past were discussed to create a roadmap for the future. All for the big goal of successfully expanding the common path and mastering future challenges together. The imposing Zalando Campus was impressive to see and it was nice to get an insight into the daily work routine at Zalando. Many thanks to the entire Zalando team and all employees who took time for us! Read more about the fashion company Zalando and our cooperation below.

After our visit to Zalando in Berlin, we would like to bring the fashion giant a little closer to you. Of course, Zalando started out small. In 2008, David Schneider and Robert Gentz founded the online retailer Zalando. Initially, the two founders sold shoes out of their own basement. Orders were packed independently and taken to the post office by the two. However, it quickly became clear to the two founders that they needed investors to grow. Contacts are important - and that is also the case here. David Schneider and Robert Gentz met the founders of Rocket Internet while they were still studying at WHU. Together, they defined the goal of building Zalando intoEurope's largest fashion platform. In a short time, the founders therefore added new products such as clothing and accessories to the range. Not only did the product range expand, Zalando also took on new target groups, such as men and children. By continuously expanding its products to include hip brands, Zalando quickly grew to become one of the largest fashion providers in Europe. However, special brands and products were not the only reason why the fashion platform achieved this level of recognition in such a short time. The unique ordering process was also a unique selling point. At Zalando, simple orders with short delivery times were possible in combination with free and uncomplicated returns. This set Zalando apart from other brands and providers.
Zalando grew in a short time to one of the largest fashion retailers in Europe. To give you an overview of the dimensions of Zalando, we would like to present a few facts and figures about the fashion platform. The numbers make sure that you get a feeling for the size of the fashion site.
- 10.4 billion euros in sales in 2021
- More than 17,000 employees
- More than 7 billion hits per year
- More than 50 million active users
- More than 1.4 million articles
- More than 5,800 brands
- Represented in 23 European markets
During our visit to Berlin, the impressive Zalando headquarters was a real highlight. Already the size of the campus of 100,000 square meters is very impressive. The Zalando campus in Berlin-Friedrichshain accommodates a total of 6,000 employees in various buildings. To bring the large number of employees together, the new headquarters offers the possibility of flexible workplaces. This means that employees can sit together with other teams every day to work on new projects together. The buildings offer sufficient space and workspaces for this purpose. The new campus consists of a total of twelve buildings. In addition to pleasant workspaces, employees can use fitness rooms, prayer rooms, open work areas and quiet zones. A real highlight is the basketball court on the new roof terrace. Zalando belongs to Berlin, and this is also evident in the architecture of the buildings. The design concept is minimalist and simple, inspired by the capital. Concrete columns are as much a part of the design as simple wooden staircases. The large glass facades stand for the openness and transparency of the fashion retailer. The buildings also include a showroom and an auditorium. These offer the possibility for larger events, such as press conferences or presentations, to take place directly on site. Like all other Zalando locations in Germany, the Zalando headquarters is powered by green electricity.
Keyword green electricity - what else is Zalando doing in terms of sustainability? It is clear that the fashion industry is contributing its share to the climate misery. Imports from the Far East, deliveries and returns, large amounts of CO2 are emitted for these transports. Environmentally harmful materials and poor working conditions also repeatedly bring the fashion world into disrepute. Of course, Zalando can only do so much for the fashion offered by the individual retailers. However, Zalando would like to contribute its share to a rethinking in the fashion industry. Whether the fashion provider is acting out of its own conviction or the behavior of customers, for whom environmental protection and neutral CO2 balances are becoming increasingly important? The reason is secondary for the time being. Zalando is aware that the fashion of the future must become greener! So what is Zalando doing now to protect the climate? Zalando is introducing pre-owned fashion in its outlets for the first time. This is, in short, second-hand clothing. In order to still ensure a certain quality, every piece of clothing is double-checked by Zalando. In this way, the Zalando range is supplemented with as-new, second-hand fashion. Outlet customers can give their clothing a second life. This saves resources and transport routes and promotes a climate-neutral approach to fashion. Because fast fashion was yesterday! Zalando also works together with About You and YOOXNET-A-PORTER in the area of sustainability. The three online retailers launched a new climate protection initiative for fashion brands in a unique collaboration. This initiative resulted in an individual learning platform that supports its brand partners in setting climate targets. The free learning program is designed to help brand partners understand the importance of climate targets and explain how to formulate them. Zalando, About You and YOOXNET-A-PORTER hope that this will encourage their retailers to do more to protect the climate.
Not only was climate protection neglected for years, but one particular target group also had a hard time finding suitable fashion - people with disabilities. It was often difficult for this group to develop their own style, as the choice of clothing was very limited. To counteract this, Zalando is expanding its range to include adaptive fashion for people with disabilities. This is designed to meet the needs of people with handicaps. To this end, Zalando is introducing its first adaptive fashion collection in 25 countries via its own brands Zign, Pier One, Anna Field, Your turn and Even&Odd. In addition, a Tommy Hilfiger Adaptive collection will be added to the range. To make it easy for customers* to find the new collections, a dedicated landing page is available in the Zalando Fashion Store. In order to continuously improve the shopping experience in the area of adaptive fashion, time and resources will be planned for this at Zalando in the coming months.
Zalando has now risen to become one of the largest fashion platforms in Europe. We are therefore proud to cooperate with this impressive company and to contribute our part to Zalando's success. Of course, we would like to introduce you to our cooperation and give you an insight into our working methods. If you want to keep up in today's fast moving and digitalized fashion world, you have to be well positioned in the areas of e-commerce and marketplace business. That's why we accompany numerous retailers in the process of presenting their products and fashion not only stationary, but also online. Marketplaces play a central role, because they offer several advantages. For example, we help retailers to offer fashion on marketplaces, such as Zalando. In addition, we are also active in the Zalando partner program and sell our goods and products on the fashion platform. As a partner, Zalando offers us the opportunity to offer our fashion through the online store in a self-determined way. We are very happy about the cooperation so far and look forward to further good and productive cooperation.
