Sustainability Labels and what they mean
You feel overwhelmed by the large amount of sustainability seals that are available on marketplaces like Zalando or About You? Do you want to know which specific social and ecological criteria products meet and what differences characterize the available standards? Then you found your place to be. We have created an overview of the most common and most important sustainability certificates that are currently displayed on marketplaces.
What are sustainability labels & certificates?
Sustainability labels offer information to consumers and other groups regarding the environmental impact of the products they want to buy/use. The use of labels on About You and Zalando are increasing. The online marketplaces are putting a stronger focus on displaying relevant sustainability information. Sustainability labels are created to set a minimum requirement for environmental and health standards and certificates verify products that meet those criteria. Thanks to displayed sustainability labels on online marketplaces consumers, brands, and manufacturers can act in favor of more environmentally friendly aspects. The main focus of those labels lie in aspects such as responsible sourcing of raw materials, carbon footprint of products, compostability, recyclability, and many more. „Regardless of the certifier, eco labels are meant to communicate whether a product has been manufactured in a way that is considered sustainable from an environmental, economic, and social standpoint.“The information offered by the label can be related to a single lifecycle stage, or product’s entire lifecycle, from manufacture to disposal. When looking at online marketplaces, especially Zalando and About You, one thing catches the eye: sustainability. There are different labels and tags that are used on products and marketplaces. But what to they actually mean? In general the following labels are verified, and the products they assess are guaranteed to meet certain environmental requirements.
Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)
Unlike other certificates, which goals it is to protect the environment, the BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) was founded as a program that does not evaluate end products. In contrast it wants to make cotton production more sustainable overall. Organic cotton accounts for less than 1% of global cotton. The BCI is one step towards reaching conventional cultivation.
Cradle to Cradle (C2C)
Cradle to Cradle is a new approach towards a sustainable circular economy. It aims at creating and using continuous material cycles and products that are healthy for people and the environment. C2C describes a safe and potentially infinite circulation of materials and nutrients in cycles. The label certifies, that all ingredients are chemically harmless and recyclable. Waste in the current sense, as created by the previous "take-make-waste" model, should no longer exists using this idea, the focus lies on usable nutrients.
Econyl
Econyl is a nylon material made from100 % recycled plastics, including old fishing nets, which can be turned into clothing and more. „In contrast to conventional nylon made from polyamide (PA), Econyl does not consume any new resources.“ Whereas Crude oil, which is typically used for conventional synthetic fibers, is harmful to the environment and the climate, Econyl saves 7 barrels of crude oil and 6.5 tons of CO2 per ton of Econyl. "It reduces the greenhouse effect of nylon by up to 90% compared to the material made from oil," the company explains.[1]

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
"The Global Organic Textile Standard(GOTS) was developed to define world-wide recognised requirements for organic textiles. From the harvesting of the raw materials, environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing to labelling, textiles certified to GOTS provide a credible assurance to the consumer.“[2] The GOTS is probably one of the most frequent used eco-labels on marketplaces, go check it out in the Zalando marketplace or the About You online shop.
GOTS is an organic certification that applies to the entire textile supply chain, meaning that the specific product consist of certified organic fibers.

Global Recycled Standard (GRS) / Recycled Claim Standard (RCS)
GRS and RCS are both standards, that are international, voluntary and include the full product.The standards established requirements for independent certification of recycled materials, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions. The aim of the certificate:define concrete requirements for the materials that are used in the product as well as requirements for correct working conditions. GRS, as well as RCS help clearly verifying the recycled content in a certified product. In total the Global Recycled Standard and the Recycled Claim Standard stand for:
- Reduce harmful impact of production on people and the environment
- Provide assurance that products are processed in a more climate-friendly way
- Encourage higher percentage of recycled content in products
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
FSC®stands for "Forest Stewardship Council®". FSC is a reliable organization for important environmental and social standards when it comes to forests. FSC is considered the most credible solution for sustainable forest management. The wood of furniture, toys, books, exercise books or pencils with the FSC seal comes from forests that are managed more responsibly.
Fairtrade cotton
Fairtrade Cotton is a label with a strong focus on social aspects. The label guarantees farmers minimum prices for their cotton that at least covers their costs. And even if the cotton prices on the world market are lower the farmers still receive these prices. However, if the price on the world market rises, the farmers receive this higher price for their cotton.
Global Traceable Down Standard
Seeing this label on marketplaces lets you know that the production of this product focuses on animal welfare. Explicitly this means, that the origin of the down is not a secret and can be looked up in close detail. In terms of animal welfare, the Global Traceable Down Standard is currently the strongest and strictest certification of the down producing and processing industry. Down certified with this label must comply 100% with the regulations and be seperated from non-certified down.
LENZINGT:TENCELTM / ViscoseTM / EcoVeroTM
Each Lenzing textile comes with a certificate and has a high recognition value due to the memorable logos. Therefore designers and end customers can be sure that they are getting genuine Tencel, which means: environmentally conscious viscose. In concrete terms, this means that every product bearing the Tencel or Eco-Vero name has been inspected by the Lenzing company.
The idea by Lenzing: define a new standard in sustainability and natural comfort with Cellulose fibers of botanical origin. This cellulose fiber originates from debarked wood. Meaning that products out of Modal consist of wood from sustainable forestry.
Characteristics:
1. almost 100 % of the solvents used during the manufacturing process are recycled.
2. the production process requires a much smaller amount of water compared to the production of conventional fibers.
3. unlike for example cotton no artificial watering or use of pesticides is required
4. TENCEL is biodegradable

OEKO-TEX MADE IN GREEN
„OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN is a traceable product label for all types of textiles and leather goods that have been produced in environmentally friendly factories and in safe and socially responsible workplaces. “ *Besides that, through the label consumers can be assured, that it is free from harmful substances.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is one of the OEKO-TEX standards. It is a traceable product label for textiles and leather products. Products with this label are tested for harmful substances. The certificate ensures that the product has been produced using sustainable processes under socially acceptable working conditions. A product ID on the label provides information about the countries and production facilities in which the product has been produced.
Organic Content Standard (OCS)
The OCS is a label that consist of criteria for certification of organic materials and chain of custody. The label requires material from certified organic farms. The certificate also make sure oft he fact, that the organic content is maintained from the farm to the final product.
REPREVE® (Unifi)
Unifi produces Repreve out of recycled plastic fibers made from polyester waste such as plastic bottles. Those Repreve fibers are then commonly used to make fabrics for athletic and fashion clothing and more, which are then sold on Zalando and co. One oft he many advantages of Repreve: lower environmental impact. The innovative fiber reduces greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and energy consumption.
Responsible Down Standard
When you find this label on marketplaces online or on a physical product you can be sure of one thing: the company is rewarded for treating animals (ducks & geese) humanely. Therefore the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) is especially relevant fort he down and feather industry. The label also wants to make sure, that the chain of custody for certified materials is strong within the whole supply chain.

Was sind Nachhaltigkeitssiegel und -zertifikate?
Nachhaltigkeitssiegel bieten Verbrauchern und anderen Gruppen Informationen über die Umweltauswirkungen der Produkte, die sie kaufen/verwenden möchten. Die Verwendung von Labels auf About You und Zalando nimmt zu. Die Online Marktplätze legen einen stärkeren Fokus auf die Anzeige von relevanten Nachhaltigkeitsinformationen. Nachhaltigkeitssiegel werden geschaffen, um Mindestanforderungen an Umwelt- und Gesundheitsstandards festzulegen und Zertifikate bestätigen, dass die Produkte diese Kriterien erfüllen. Dank der angezeigten Nachhaltigkeitssiegel auf Online Marktplätzen können Verbraucher, Marken und Hersteller verstärkt zugunsten der Umwelthandeln. Es gibt verschiedene Labels und Kennzeichnungen, die auf Produkten und Marktplätzen verwendet werden. Aber was bedeuten sie eigentlich? In der Regel sind die folgenden Siegel verifiziert, und die von ihnen bewerteten Produkte erfüllen garantiert bestimmte Umweltanforderungen.
Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)
Im Gegensatz zu anderen Zertifikaten, deren Ziel es ist, die Umwelt zu schützen, wurde die BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) nicht gegründet, um das Endprodukt zu bewerten. Vielmehr soll durch die BCI die Baumwollproduktion insgesamt nachhaltiger gemacht werden. Bio-Baumwolle macht weniger als 1 % der weltweiten Baumwollproduktion aus. Die BCI ist ein Schritt auf dem Weg zum konventionellen Anbau von Bio-Baumwolle.
Cradle to Cradle (C2C)
Cradle to Cradle ist ein neuartiger Ansatz für einen nachhaltigeren Produktionskreislauf. C2C zielt darauf ab, kontinuierliche Materialkreisläufe und Produkte zu schaffen und zu nutzen, die für Mensch und Umwelt gesund sind. C2C beschreibt einen sicheren und potenziell unendlichen Kreislauf von Materialien und Nährstoffen. Das Label zeigt also, dass alle Inhaltsstoffe chemisch unbedenklich und recycelbar sind. Abfall im bisherigen Sinne, wie er durch das bisherige"take-make-waste"-Modell entstanden ist, soll es nach dieser Idee nicht mehr geben, der Fokus liegt auf wiederverwendbaren Nährstoffen.
Econyl
Econyl ist ein Nylonmaterial, das zu 100 %aus recycelten Kunststoffen, bsps. alter Fischernetze, hergestellt wird und zuKleidung und mehr verarbeitet werden kann. "Im Gegensatz zu herkömmlichemNylon aus Polyamid (PA) verbraucht Econyl keine neuen Ressourcen." Während bspw. Erdöl, das für herkömmliche Kunstfasern verwendet wird, umwelt- und klimaschädlich ist, spart Econyl 7 Kanister Erdöl und 6,5 Tonnen CO2 pro Tonne Econyl. "Es reduziert den Treibhauseffekt von Nylon um bis zu 90 % imVergleich zu dem aus Erdöl hergestellten Material", erklärt das Unternehmen.
Fairtrade cotton
Fairtrade Cotton ist ein Siegel, bei dem soziale Aspekte eine große Rolle spielen. Das Label garantiert den BauernMindestpreise für ihre Baumwolle, die mindestens ihre Kosten decken. Und selbst wenn die Baumwollpreise auf dem Weltmarkt niedriger sind, erhalten die Bauern diese Preise. Steigt jedoch der Weltmarktpreis, erhalten die Bauern diesen höheren Preis für ihre Baumwolle.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
FSC® steht für "Forest Stewardship Council®". FSC ist eine verlässliche Organisation für wichtige Umwelt- undSozialstandards im Bereich Wälder. Das Holz von Möbeln, Spielzeug, Büchern,Schulheften oder Stiften etc. mit dem FSC-Siegel stammt also aus Wäldern, die verantwortungsvoll bewirtschaftet werden.
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
„Der Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) wurde entwickelt, um weltweit anerkannte Anforderungen für ökologische Textilien festzulegen. Von der Ernte der Rohstoffe über die umwelt- und sozialverträgliche Herstellung bis hin zur Kennzeichnung bieten GOTS-zertifizierte Textilien dem Verbraucher eine glaubwürdige Sicherheit." GOTS ist eine Bio-Zertifizierung, die sich auf die gesamte textile Lieferkette bezieht und besagt, dass das jeweilige Produkt aus zertifizierten Bio-Fasern besteht. DerGOTS ist eines der am häufigsten verwendeten Öko-Labels auf Marktplätzen, checke das gerne mal auf dem Zalando-Marktplatz oder im About You-Onlineshop.
Global Recycled Standard (GRS) /Recycled ClaimStandard (RCS)
GRS und RCS sind beides Standards, die international und freiwillig sind und das gesamte Produkt umfassen. Die Standards legen die Anforderungen für eine unabhängige Zertifizierung von recycelten Materialien, Lieferkette, sozialen und ökologischen Praktiken fest. Ziel des Zertifikats ist es, konkreteAnforderungen an die im Produkt verwendeten Materialien sowie Anforderungen an korrekte Arbeitsbedingungen zu definieren. Sowohl GRS als auch RCS helfen dabei, den Recyclinganteil in einem zertifizierten Produkt eindeutig nachzuweisen. Insgesamt stehen der Global Recycled Standard und der RecycledClaim Standard für:
- Verringerung der schädlichen Auswirkungen der Produktion auf Mensch &Umwelt
- Gewährleistung, dass Produkte auf klimafreundlichere Weise verarbeitet werden
- Förderung eines höheren Anteils an recyceltem Material in Produkten
Global Traceable Down Standard
Wenn Du dieses Etikett auf den Marktplätzen sehen, weißt Du, dass bei der Herstellung dieses Produkts der Tierschutz im Vordergrund steht. Im Detail bedeutet dies, dass die Herkunft der Daunen kein Geheimnis ist und bis ins kleinste Detail nachgeprüft werden kann. Im Hinblick auf den Tierschutz ist der Global Traceable DownStandard die derzeit strengste Zertifizierung der daunenproduzierenden und-verarbeitenden Industrie. Daunen, die mit diesem Label zertifiziert sind, müssen zu 100 % den Vorschriften entsprechen und von nicht-zertifiziertenDaunen getrennt werden.
LENZINGT: TENCELTM / ViscoseTM/ EcoVeroTM
Jedes Textil mit einer Kennzeichnung von Lenzing ist mit einem Zertifikat versehen und hat durch die einprägsamen Logos einen hohen Wiedererkennungswert. Marken und Kunden können daher sicher sein, dass sie echtes Tencel, das heißt: umweltbewusste Viskose, erhalten. Konkret bedeutet dies, dass jedes Produkt, das den Namen Tencel oder Eco-Vero trägt, von der Firma Lenzing geprüft wurde.
Die Idee von Lenzing: mitCellulosefasern pflanzlichen Ursprungs einen neuen Standard für Nachhaltigkeit und natürlichen Komfort zu definieren. Diese Cellulosefaser wird aus Holzgewonnen. Das bedeutet, dass Produkte aus Modal etc. aus Holz aus nachhaltigerForstwirtschaft bestehen.
Eigenschaften:
1. Nahezu 100 % der bei der Herstellung verwendetenLösungsmittel werden recycelt.
2. Der Produktionsprozess benötigt eine viel geringere Menge an Wasser als die Produktion von herkömmlichen Fasern.
3. Anders als beispielsweise bei Baumwolle ist keine künstliche Bewässerung oder der Einsatz von Pestiziden erforderlich.
4. TENCEL ist biologisch abbaubar

OEKO-TEXMADE IN GREEN
"OEKO-TEX®MADE IN GREEN ist ein rückverfolgbares Produktlabel für alle Arten vonTextilien und Lederwaren, die in umweltfreundlichen Fabriken und an sicheren und sozial verantwortlichen Arbeitsplätzen hergestellt wurden. Durch die Kennzeichnung können Kunden zudem sicher sein, dass die Produkte frei von Schadstoffen sind.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 ist einer der OEKO-TEXStandards. Es handelt sich um ein rückverfolgbares Produktlabel für Textilien und Lederprodukte. Produkte mit diesem Label werden auf Schadstoffe geprüft.Das Zertifikat gewährleistet, dass das Produkt in nachhaltigen Prozessen unter sozialverträglichen Arbeitsbedingungen hergestellt wurde. Eine Produkt-ID auf dem Etikett gibt Auskunft darüber, in welchen Ländern und Produktionsstätten das Produkt hergestellt wurde.
Organic Content Standard (OCS)
Das OCS ist ein Label, dass Kriterien für die Zertifizierung von biologischen Materialien und die Lieferkette enthält. Für das Label muss das Material von zertifizierten Biobetrieben stammen. Das Zertifikat stellt auch sicher, dass der Bio-Anteil vom Bauernhof bis zum Endprodukt erhalten bleibt, also die gesamte Herstellung betrifft.
REPREVE® (Unifi)
Unifi stellt REPREVE aus recycelten Kunststofffasern her, die aus Abfällen wie Plastikflaschen gewonnen werden. Diese Repreve-Fasern werden dann üblicherweise zu Stoffen für Sport- und Modebekleidung und mehr verarbeitet, die dann bei Zalando und Co. verkauft werden. Einer der vielen Vorteile von REPREVE: geringere Umweltbelastung. Die innovative Faser reduziert die Treibhausgasemissionen, den Wasserverbrauch und den Energieverbrauch.
Responsible Down Standard
Wenn Du dieses Zeichen auf Online Marktplätzen oder auf einem physischen Produkt findest, kannst Du ziemlich sicher sein, dass das Unternehmen sich für die humane Behandlung von Tieren (Enten und Gänsen) einsetzt.Deshalb ist der Responsible Down Standard (RDS) für die Daunen- und Federnindustrie von besonderer Bedeutung. Das Label will auch sicherstellen, dass die Kontrollkette für zertifizierte Materialien innerhalb der gesamten Lieferkette lückenlos ist.
